Melted Crayon Easter Eggs

Did you know that today is National Crayon Day? How fun is that? Our relationship at my house with crayons is definitely a love-hate relationship. We love crayons and use them daily…we use crayons so much that I hate all the interesting places that I find them. Our collection of broken crayons is on the verge of ridiculous! So to celebrate National Crayon day with Crayola and put to use some of our broken crayons we made these Hot Crayon Easter Eggs.

Items Needed for Hot Egg Crayons:

  • Peeled crayons (Crayola works best because they have the right ratio of color to wax- some other brands I have tried melt and leave a wax with a washed out color)
  • Boiled Eggs (hot)
  • Grater
  • Cupcake Liners
  • Plate or tray
  • Egg Carton

One thing that is really great about this craft is that you do not have to worry about dye mess with the kids. Our dining room is carpeted so when it comes to stuff like that I get a tad worried. I know my kids, decorating each other with dye would be beyond tempting.

To get started boil your eggs and while those are boiling shave your crayons down. I did ours into a powder, and size will work. You can also skip this step and just draw directly on to the hot eggs (your crayons will melt as you draw).

When I shave down my crayons I mix shades of the same color. If you are grating them down all on the same tray, you are going to get a mixture of colors anyways. As you finish with one color empty the tray into a cup cake holder. By the time the eggs are done boiling you should have an array of colors to choose from.

Then cut an egg carton to fit the amount of eggs that you have boiled and carefully remove the eggs from the water. I use a slotted spoon, it does the job nicely. Place each egg back into the egg carton.

Before handing the eggs over to your kids I would strongly suggest talking to them about they are hot. They shouldn’t be hot enough to burn, but it still wouldn’t be pleasant to pick one up. After talking about safety issues hand the cup cake liners filled with crayon shavings over to your kids and let them sprinkle and pour their designs on to the eggs. It is a ton of fun (and will spark all sorts of questions) to watch the crayons bubble and melt.

Leave your eggs in the cartons until they cool down (about an hour). You may need to help a child remove cooled eggs as the wax does make them slippery. Clean up of leftover crayon shavings is extremely simple and the end result of the eggs is gorgeous! My two year old is super proud of his Easter eggs and has been showing them to everyone!

Some Fun Facts to Help You Celebrate National Crayon Day (Courtesy of Crayola):

  • The first box of Crayola crayons was introduced in 1903. It sold for a nickel and included the same eight colors available today: red, blue, yellow, green, violet, orange, black and brown.
  • Crayola produces nearly 3 billion crayons each year, an average of 12 million wax sticks daily. That’s enough to circle the globe 6 times!
  • The average child in the United States will wear down about 730 crayons by his or her 10th birthday (11,464 boxes or 7 lbs of crayons) enough to cover an NBA basketball court!
