The School We Nominated and Why

This is a story about Skyler and how his school, specially his teacher deserve all the help they can get as they are making a real difference one child at a time.

You see the words on a page don’t speak to Skyler like they do some children. They are not alive to him and goodness is this little boy alive. When he speaks about his back yard chickens, his puppy, his adventures in the forest behind his house and even when he talks about his video games his is so excited and alive. It is hard not to get excited with him. He is pure joy when he is sharing these parts of his life, but that light dims when he has to look at the still words in his work book. He can’t seem to catch on to these words and he needed to.

Perhaps if the words could run through the forest, leap over logs, splash through mud puddles and then hide in the honey kissed tall summer grass in the field he would catch them then. Perhaps if his chickens found them interesting he would too. Maybe if the words blinked on a screen and made him feel like a hero when he mastered them then he would understands them better.

Sadly though to Skyler, the words in his work book just sit there, still, not alive for him. Just black and white and nothing as wild and wonderful as he is.

His teacher saw all this and understood and unlike any before her she didn’t try and force the dull book learning on him. She did something remarkable, because she is a remarkable teacher from a remarkable school. She created a learning environment that HE could explore, could move in, could find his spelling words and master them. She decorated the school room to look like a forest, she told me she wants to change it to look like video game next. For now the words are hidden inside paper logs, behind fluffy white clouds, in little bird nests, and behind beautiful flower petals. The class room looks more alive now! The kids take turns hunting the words, spelling them, and remembering where each word is hidden. They write them down in a journal. They take turns finding the words in alphabetical order and they write them that way too. This adventure in the classroom along with other things has Skyler finally catching his spelling words, finally they speak to him as they are now more alive than when they were just laying in a still book.

I know the class room set up had to have been costly and very time consuming. I know that changing it to look like a video game will be too. I can only imagine what other themes his teacher has in mind to accommodate all the kids in the class who have passions. What a gift it would be to help her out. I hope you vote for this school.

You see? It doesn’t take much. Share why your child’s school is amazing and they just might win. And in the meantime? Clip those coupons and help them save! Every penny helps.
