When it comes to my girls, both are very curious by nature but lack the confidence they need to fully explore when it comes to STEM. Both will participate in various science, math, or engineering activities (no hesitations towards tech), but rely strongly on the person leading the activity rather than jumping in feet first. Recently we were sent a LEGO® Friends box and I have to love the confidence it has given my girls. No hesitations. No lack of confidence. Both jumped in feet first for a full hour of play!
To watch my girls sit down, collaborate, create, and have fun learning some of the concepts that typically lead to tears was absolutely fabulous. We went through counting, addition, subtraction, fractions, and so many more math concepts while building- and never once did they realize we were working on math!
This was our first time really exploring construction play together. I have always had blocks and LEGO’s® lying around, but honestly the girls have never shown much interest in them. Maybe it was the fact that I have been storing our LEGO’s® in the train table…either way my girls definitely enjoyed and gained a sense of pride in their creations while playing with LEGO® Friends.
According to research from The LEGO Foundation, children learn about themselves, others and the world through play. LEGO® building is one of the few play patterns capable of channeling creativity towards solving specific questions or problems and into different unique expressions, giving form to our imagination, feelings and identities. Construction play makes it possible to harness curiosity and playfulness simultaneously in pursuit of learning and creativity.
LEGO® Friends Learning:
Both of my girls (age 6) did struggle a bit with the instruction manuals. After some help they did get a good grasp on it! After making a couple models both girls wanted to record their creations. The PDF below is a printable journal that your child can use to record their LEGO® Friends inventions! My girls have almost created an entire book worth of inventions!
ABOUT LEGO® FRIENDS
LEGO® Friends is a collection of building sets that blend the iconic LEGO construction experience with stories, settings and themes designed to meet children’s desire for creativity and a highly-detailed, character-based world. Since its launch in 2012, LEGO® Friends has dramatically increased the number of girls building with LEGO bricks and enjoying the benefits of construction play.
With a shared vision of unleashing confidence through accomplishment, LEGO® Friends has teamed up with Girls on the Run® (GOTR), a physical activity-based positive youth development program to inspire girls everywhere to achieve their limitless potential. Girls are using LEGO Friends bricks and elements to tell stories, embrace their differences and find strength in their connectedness.
Found this recently! It doesn’t have Friends Manuals in it, but it is an amazing resource if you ever loose a LEGO® Instruction Manual!
