Exploding Pumpkin!

This Exploding Pumpkin Experiment is super neat! Can't wait to do it with the kids!

Lately Livia has been regressing. It is a pattern that I have gotten all too familiar with — 2 weeks forward, 1 week back. So this afternoon when a quick activity was needed I could not think of anything more fun and engaging to do than a simple sensory science activity. As an added bonus it is blue which got Meatball super excited! We had a blast with this volcano pumpkin experiment!

We found these white pumpkins at our local grocer for insanely cheap. I picked up a couple of them to do our Teal Pumpkins for FARE, but by the time we were done decorating those we still had a couple left. I had seen different versions of this science experiment on a couple different sites such as Little Bins for Little Hands and Growing a Jeweled Rose and figured this would be a fantastic way to have some fun before decorating another pumpkin!

Frog Egg Slime! A Slippery Squishy Sensory Bin

Frog Egg Slime! A Squishy Slipper Sensory Bin

Earlier this summer we were able to visit this amazing natural playground in Rochester, MN. If ya’ll ever go through there make sure to stop and visit (it is called Oxbow). While we were there we got to see Frogs and Toads up close and it was super cool. This experience spurred on a fascination with frogs for my kids. Ya’ll are never going to believe what this Frog Egg Sensory Bin is made out of, but it was perfect for setting up some pretend play while learning about the anatomy of Frog Eggs.

How to Make a Crystal Geode

How to Make a Crystal Geode

I remember as a kid my Grandma used to have a bookshelf lined with Geodes. They were absolutely magical to me. Like a key to the land of Dwarves and Fairies (I used to think that was how crystals were made). Recently my kids asked how to make a Crystal Geode. I don’t think I have been this excited for a science experiment in a while. This simple science experiment definitely brought out the kid in me!

How to Make a Crystal Geode

What is a Geode?

A Geode is a hollow sedimentary rock that has beautiful crystals inside. In the Greek language, geode means “shape of the earth”. Geodes are round like earth or oblong like an egg. They are formed over millions of years through exposure to heat and water. It can take hundreds of millions of years for the space inside a geode to be filled. Once a geode which is completely filled with crystals is called a nodule.
