You kid, every kid is extraordinary. Celebrate your extraordinary child.

Although this blog was not started because of Livia, she was half the inspiration. In life, she was is the one that inspires me when I am tempted to throw it all in. I know I don’t tend to get very personal on here. I tell stories and show what we do, but I never really tell why.

Olivia taught me early on how to be a mom. Our first years were such a roller coaster. She was full of sass and spirit. Her determination was one of amazement. Although diagnosed with Autism {they thought she would be non-verbal for life}, she did not allow herself to be put into any box.

The world through her eyes was one filled with wonder. For the first four years of her life Livia didn’t really talk. She tried here and there, she had phrases and words, but they were all nonsensical. Still every day was a new adventure where she was teaching me and showing me a world I had previously been blind to.

She taught me how to trust my instincts and fight for her, standing besides her. Some of the battles we have faced together are ones no family should ever have to face. Yet, through all the discrimination and judgement she did nothing but love.

She came through it all with a resilience and strength beyond her years. She showed the nay-sayers wrong, excelled, and pushed her limits. She worked hard with her doctors to fight being defined by her early childhood years.

I am so proud of the person Livia has become. She is an amazing big sister, taking every challenge in stride. She finds the good in everyone. And to her, a limit on her abilities is nothing more than a challenge.

It’s the little things, the daily accomplishments that make Livia extraordinary. The small steps. The joy that comes with childhood. Those small moments that are silently celebrated that make her {and all children} extraordinary.

She is my inspiration. My motivation to do better. This blog was started because she showed me her passion. She let me into her world of play and wonder. She pushed me to learn how to connect with her, how to teach her, how to step out from behind the lesson. It’s been a hard path, but one that has been worth every step.

To help preserve the memories of those small things I made a video about Livia through Stanford’s Children Health Your Extraordinary Child website.
