Homemade Laundry Detergent: Soap nuts are a simple and effective way to clean your laundry without harsh chemicals. If you have been looking for a simple homemade laundry soap recipe that doesn’t use borax then this is something that you must try!
Recently we were sent Little Lambs Soap Nuts and Dryer Balls for review. I have been looking for a way to make laundry detergent that is free of borax so I was beyond excited for this natural laundry solution! However, when they showed up and I opened the package that excitement died pretty quickly…
I was not expecting them to smell as strong as they did. While soap nuts have a very strong cider vinegar smell to them, do not let this put you off. I promise that your clothes will not hold this smell and that they are completely worth that first shock to the nose!
How to Use Soap Nuts:
Set up for soap nuts was beyond simple. In the past I have made laundry soap that literally would take me a couple hours to prepare and cook up a full batch…not to mention that my finger tips would be butchered by the end of it from having to grate up a bar of soap. Using soap nuts is absolutely nothing like this! It is just as easy as scooping out a cup of store bought laundry soap!
In your package will a small cloth bag. Simply remove 4-5 soap nuts, place them inside the bag, and run under hot water until they soften. You will begin to see some suds appear.
Once softened open up your bag and add in an essential oil. This is completely optional — your clothes will not have a scent if you skip this step. We chose to use Citrus Fresh Essential Oils (2-3 drops) since I love the way it smells on my clothes!
Then simply tie your bag shut, throw into your washer machine, add your clothes, and turn on. Amazingly simple!
Once your load of laundry is done you don’t even have to remove the bag! Either throw it into the dryer with your clothes or if you hang your clothes to dry place your soap nuts somewhere where they can also dry out.
We gave Little Lambs Wool Dryer Balls a try in the dryer with our nuts. Since we are in an apartment hanging clothes out to dry isn’t exactly an option for us.
I also used Citrus Fresh Essential Oils on the wool dryer balls to give our laundry a nice citrus-y burst. It only took 2 drops to fill the air with a cheerful scent!
Our laundry turned out super soft, smelled amazing, and best of all –this method was extremely light on the wallet and safe for the environment!
