b is for Butterfly Letter of the Week Craft
I’ve got another fun craft for you to add to your word wall at home! Are you ready for this week? Our letter is the letter B! When you were younger, did you ever catch caterpillars and watch them change into beautiful butterflies? I remember very vividly doing this and it was so much fun. (Maybe that’s an idea for another activity to do with the kids!)

How to Create your b is for Butterfly Craft
STEP 1: Use a sharpie marker to draw out a lowercase b and an uppercase B. Have kids cut this out – just make sure to help younger kids.
STEP 2: Glue the uppercase B onto the green sheet of construction paper facing backwards. This will be the butterfly wing. Glue the lower case b on top of it.
STEP 3: Decorate the wings with sharpies. Cut out small dots from the white construction paper. Cut out two small rectangles and two small dots from the black construction paper.
STEP 4: Glue the white dots on to the wings. Use the black rectangles and circles to create antennas for the butterfly.
Now your craft is ready to display!
That’s all there is to making your b preschool letter of the week craft! I hope you and your little one had fun making this awesome craft. Aren’t you ready to go find some caterpillars to watch turn into pretty butterflies? This would be a great adventure for the kids.
B is for Butterfly Finger Play
Caterpillar and Butterfly Hand Motion Song
by Megan Sheakoski
(Sung to the tune of Are You Sleeping?)
Caterpillar, caterpillar,
In my hand, in my hand,
Soon you’ll be a butterfly.
Soon you’ll be a butterfly.
And fly away. Fly away.
The kids cup their hands and swing them gently back and forth in front of their bodies while singing about the caterpillar. They hook their thumbs and flutter their fingers like wings during the third and fourth line and then move their butterfly fingers up into the air for the last line.
Flutter, flutter, Butterfly
Sung to: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”
Flutter, flutter, butterfly.
Floating in the summer sky.
Floating by for all to see,
Floating by so merrily.
Flutter, flutter, butterfly,
Floating in the summer sky.
Roly-Poly Caterpillar
Roly-poly caterpillar (wiggle right pointer finger)
Into a corner crept, (place right pointer finger in left cupped hand)
Spun around himself a blanket (spin around)
Then for a long time slept. (place head on folded hands)
Roly-poly caterpillar (wiggle right pointer finger)
Wakening by and by, (“stretch” right pointer finger)
Found himself with beautiful wings
Changed to a butterfly. (flutter arms like wings)
Butterfly Chant
A burst of blue,
A shock of green,
A flap of wings is all that’s seen.
A flutter in the flower beds,
A burst of blue,
A bit of red,
A whisper as it flutters by,
You’re oh so pretty, butterfly.
