Supplies Needed:

  • Large White Paper Plate
  • Black marker
  • Ruler
  • Green Construction Paper
  • Brown Construction Paper
  • Blue Construction Paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors (we love this brand for young kids)
  • White rice
  • Pasta: Rotini, Shell, Bow Tie

Step-by-Step Directions:

Now that you have your supplies ready, it’s time to start creating your butterfly life cycle paper plate craft! Here are the step-by-step directions:

Using a ruler and black marker, divide the paper plate into four equal sections.

Cut out a leaf shape from the green construction paper and glue it onto one of the sections of the paper plate. This will represent the first stage of the butterfly life cycle: the egg.

Cover the leaf with white rice to create the appearance of small eggs.

Cut a branch shape from the brown construction paper as well as a small green leaf, and glue it onto the next section of the paper plate. This will represent the second stage of the butterfly life cycle: the caterpillar.

Glue a rotini noodle onto the branch to represent the caterpillar’s body.

Cut another branch shape from the brown construction paper and glue it onto the third section of the paper plate. This will represent the third stage of the butterfly life cycle: the chrysalis.

Glue a shell-shaped pasta onto the branch to represent the chrysalis.

Glue a bow tie pasta onto the last section of the paper plate to represent the fourth and final stage of the butterfly life cycle: the butterfly.

Use a black marker to label each section with the corresponding stage of the butterfly life cycle (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly).

Draw arrows between each section to show the progression of the butterfly life cycle.

Cut a rectangle shape from the blue construction paper and glue it in the center of the paper plate. Write “Life Cycle of a Butterfly” on the blue rectangle.

Let your butterfly life cycle paper plate craft dry completely before displaying or hanging it up for all to see!
