How to Make a Beautiful Rainbow Paper Plate

Step 1: Gather your supplies.

Step 2: Cut your paper plates in half. Each paper plate half will become a rainbow!

Step 3: Paint your rainbow! We worked from the outside edge in, starting with red first. If you are making this rainbow craft with younger kids, use a pencil or black marker to creating drawing lines for the arch lines that they can follow.

Step 4: After your paint has dried, cut a 2-inch strip of scrap paper and glue it to the back of your rainbow at the bottom of the paper plate.

Step 5: Glue cotton balls to the strip on the bottom of your rainbow and cut off any excess paper. If you would have enough excess paper cut out raindrops, paint them blue, and use thread to hang them behind your clouds!

Then hang up for all to see!

Skills Kids Work on While Making a Rainbow Paper Plate

This rainbow paper plate is such a cute paper plate craft for kids. When making a craft such as this we love to pair it with a good playful story. For this craft we chose the book, “What Makes a Rainbow by. Betty Ann Schwartz“. This is a super fun color book for toddlers that explores the colors of the rainbow with colored ribbons that pop-up with each turn of the page.

This a great opportunity to talk about the colors of the rainbow, color mixing, and what order they go in. Kids also have a chance to work on fine motor control while painting their colors.
