Build a Pumpkin Play Dough Tray

Sharing is caring!

Our Build a Pumpkin Play Dough Tray started the year my kids decided our jack-o’-lantern looked lonely. One pumpkin on the porch wasn’t cutting it…clearly, it needed an entire family of squishy sidekicks.

So we spent the afternoon crafting the most delightfully odd crew of pumpkins you’ve ever seen. There was a superhero pumpkin, a sleepy pumpkin, and one that looked suspiciously like our cat (whiskers and all).

Now it’s kind of a fall thing around here. The great pumpkin reunion, where creativity runs wild and nobody argues about screen time for at least twenty minutes.

What You’ll Need to Build a Pumpkin Play Dough Tray

You don’t need much to pull together this off. Just a few play dough tray basics that make kids feel like creative geniuses.

  • Taste Safe Pumpkin Play Dough – soft, squishy, and ready for serious pumpkin building.
  • Pumpkin seeds – for eyes, smiles, or texture
  • Googly eyes – because obviously.
  • Small sticks or twigs – instant pumpkin stems.
  • Pipe cleaners – twisty vines, wild hair, or who-knows-what.
  • Black beans – the perfect finishing touch for a little pumpkin personality.

That’s it! Simple, open-ended, and totally kid-driven. Just set it out and watch the pumpkin parade begin.

How to Set Up Your Build a Pumpkin Play Dough Tray

Grab your tray – any divided one you’ve got. I used this green one because it makes the orange playdough look ridiculously cute, but honestly, anything works.

Plop your playdough in the middle. Don’t overthink it. Then start filling each section with your pumpkin parts: seeds, sticks, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, beans…all the little bits that make kids go “Ooooh!” when they see it.

Pop the printable task cards next to the tray, and you’re done.

Seriously. That’s it.

The setup takes maybe two minutes, and the play lasts way longer than you’d expect. Kids can follow the cards or completely ignore them and make wild, one-of-a-kind pumpkins. Either way, you’ve got yourself a solid 20 minutes of quiet play and maybe, maybe a warm cup of coffee.

Time to Play (a.k.a. Operation: Pumpkin Chaos)

Here’s where the magic happens…and by “magic,” I mean the glorious silence of fully engaged kids. Some kids will study the cards like they’re decoding a top-secret pumpkin mission.

Others will go completely rogue and give their pumpkin twelve eyes, three stems, and a very dramatic personality. Both approaches are 100% correct.

If you want to sneak in a little learning (without announcing it), ask fun questions while they play:

“Which pumpkin has more seeds?”
“How many eyes does your pumpkin need to see in the dark?”
“Can your pumpkin make a silly face?”

Boom! Instant math, fine motor practice, and creativity all rolled into one messy, adorable activity.

How to Store Your Pumpkin Play Dough Tray

Once your pumpkin creations have run their course (and your table looks like a fall explosion), cleanup’s easy. Pop the little bits into zip bags or small containers.

All those tiny treasures, plus the task cards and any play dough toys you used, fit perfectly inside a stackable board-game-style storage box. It keeps everything neat, ready to grab the next time your kids ask to “build just one more pumpkin.”

If you used our taste safe pumpkin playdough recipe, store the dough separately in an airtight container or zip-top bag. It’ll stay soft for about two weeks. Just give it a quick knead before you play again. If it starts to dry out, add a drop or two of oil and work it back to life.
