What You’ll Need to Bring Frankenstein to Life

Before you start crafting your little creature, gather your supplies. Most of these are probably already lurking in your art drawer (right next to the glitter you swore you’d never open again).

  • Paper plate – the perfect base for your spooky mask masterpiece.
  • Green acrylic paint – because every Frankenstein needs that signature monster glow.
  • Black construction paper – for his wild, jagged hair and spooky stitches.
  • Scissors – kid-safe ones work great for trimming the plate and paper pieces.
  • Glue stick – the unsung hero of every paper plate craft.
  • Black marker – for sketching and outlining those monster details.
  • Hole punch – for those mask straps…Frankenstein’s gotta stay put!
  • Elastic string – to turn your paper plate into a wearable mask.

Now that your spooky supplies are ready, let’s bring this monster to life!

How to Make a Frankenstein Paper Plate Mask

This is where things get spooky (and slightly silly). Grab your little ghoul squad and let’s bring Frankenstein to life…minus the lightning bolts and drama.

Step 1: Gather your supplies

Time to set up your monster lab! Lay out your supplies and clear a little space…trust me, Frankenstein takes up more room than you think.

Step 2: Sketch Frankenstein’s face

Use your black marker to draw a face right onto your paper plate. You can use the printable template or freehand it, both work great! Two eyes, one mouth, and that famous flat-topped head. The wobblier your lines, the better. Carefully cut along the lines to reveal the mask base.

Step 3: Paint the mask green

Grab your green paint and go wild! The goal here is “electrified swamp creature,” not “perfectly even coverage.” If it looks messy, that’s just part of the monster charm.

Step 4: Cut out the hair from black paper

Use the template or freehand a zigzag strip of black paper for that classic Frankenstein look. Think bedhead meets mad scientist.

Step 5: Glue the black hair on top

Stick the hair across the top edge of the plate. If it’s crooked, just call it “artistic.” You’re crafting a monster, not a runway model.

Step 6: Cut out the rest of the pieces

Now it’s time to add some character – eyes, eyebrows, scars, and stitches! You can use the template or freehand whatever feels right. Remember: the weirder, the better.

Step 7: Glue the black paper pieces onto the mask

Grab your glue stick and start layering those details. Suddenly, that plain paper plate has a lot more attitude (and probably some serious backstory).

Step 8: Punch holes and add string

Use your hole punch to make one hole on each side of the mask. Thread your string or elastic through and tie it off. Voilà! Wearable monster mode: activated.

Step 9: Enjoy your Frankenstein mask

Step back and admire your little monster! Then let your kid test-drive their creation with a dramatic “It’s aliiiive!” and a few spooky poses. Bonus points if they stomp around the room practicing their best monster walk.
