Halloween Black Cat Paper Plate Craft

Every Halloween lineup needs at least one mysterious black cat. I don’t make the rules.

This Halloween Black Cat Paper Plate Craft is simple enough for preschoolers, fun enough for big kids, and adorable enough to tape all over your walls without it looking like a glitter explosion.

The bright yellow whiskers and wide cat eyes give these spooky kitties so much personality. Seriously, half the fun is watching kids decide what to name them. (Ours so far: Whisker Queen, Spooky Steve, and… Banana Pants. Don’t ask. 😆)

Step-by-Step Black Cat Paper Plate Craft Tutorial

Ready to make your not-so-spooky kitty? This is a super forgiving craft, perfect for classrooms, homeschool lessons, or after-school art time.

Step 1: Gather your supplies.

Pull everything together before starting so the kids can focus on creating. If you’ve ever had a classroom of 20 kids all asking “Where’s the glue?”… you know why this step matters.

Overhead view of black, green, and yellow construction paper, black acrylic paint, glue stick, colorful scissors, yellow pipe cleaners, and a white paper plate — all the supplies needed for a black cat paper plate craft.

Step 2: Paint your paper plate black.

Cover the entire plate whiskers, nose, and all with black paint. A little texture adds character, so don’t worry if it’s not perfectly smooth. Let it dry while you prep the next pieces.

Step 3: Cut out the cat’s ears and nose.

Grab your black and green paper and snip out two triangles for the ears and a little half-circle for the nose. You can use the template included in the printable packet to make things super easy, or freehand it and let those creative claws come out! Crooked ears? Oversized nose? Perfect. That’s exactly what gives each Halloween cat its own mischievous charm.

Step 4: Glue on the ears and nose.

Attach your ears to the top back of the plate and the nose near the center. Watching the cat face come together at this point is always magical…even for grown-ups.

Step 5: Cut out and add the eyes.

Cut out two yellow ovals and add small black slits for pupils. You can draw these on or cut them out of paper. Kids always love making their cats look “sneaky” or “silly.”

Step 6: Glue on the eyes.

Time to give your cat its look. Crooked eyes? Fierce glare? Confused houseplant energy? Whatever vibe your kid chooses it’s gold.

Step 7: Cut the whiskers.

Grab those yellow pipe cleaners and chop them into whisker lengths. Perfection is optional…a little “oops” goes a long way in giving your cat some attitude.

Six yellow pipe cleaners laid out neatly on purple paper next to colorful scissors, ready to be cut for whiskers.

Step 8: Attach the whiskers.

Glue (or tape) them under the nose and just watch… your cat now has main character energy. This is also the part where everyone names their cat. (Banana Pants is still in the lead.)

Step 9: Let it dry and show it off.

Your black cat is officially ready to haunt bulletin boards, classroom doors, and every spare inch of your wall. Fair warning: one cat usually turns into five. They multiply fast.
