I remember how growing up, popcorn garlands were the ultimate in holiday decor. My mother would always let me be in charge of the garlands, so I took it upon myself to string every single bit of popcorn, one by one. This is why today, I felt it most appropriate to come up with my own take on Popcorn Names.
My youngest niece, who is now 7 years old, is going through this incredible stage of independence. Every morning, she wants to choose her own clothes and get ready all by herself. We encourage her new behavior of self-reliance and so we’ve been providing her with activities to help her practice zipping, buttoning, using Velcro, etc. I thought it would be fantastic to put together a button snake type-of-activity for her and her friends. To get into the holiday spirit, I used red and green supplies and also, gave it a popcorn garland theme. This is how we came up with our Felt Holiday Popcorn Names.

Directions:
1. Cut out your yellow felt into popcorn-shaped pieces. I made mine fairly large (about 3 to 4 inches wide) so that I had enough space for the letters and button slits. Cut out as many popcorn shapes as you need for each letter of the child’s name. (Hint: I cut out cloud-like shapes to obtain my popcorn pieces.)
2. With your red felt, cut out 1-inch letters to spell out the child’s name.
3. With a hot glue gun, glue one button to each end of your ribbon. Set aside. Glue one letter to a popcorn piece. Allow for everything to dry.
4.Once the glue is dried, cut slits on the popcorn pieces, large enough so that the button can go through them.
My niece and her friends had lots of fun with their Felt Holiday Popcorn Names. It was great to see them work the buttons and they were ecstatic to see that each one was personalized. This activity is wonderful to have when the kids come over during the holidays.
