Shaving Cream Sort and Spell

Sharing is caring!

This week we have been trying out a lot of different spelling activities as my daughter makes her way through her Words Their Way spelling list. So far this game of Shaving Cream Sort and Spell has been my daughter’s favorite — how could it not be for a kid that LOVES sensory messes?!

If you are not familiar with Words Their Way, it is a program that focuses on getting kids to examine and manipulate their spelling words instead of just memorizing them. We have been having a lot of fun with it!

How to Play

Setting up play was super simple. Since our cards were already cut out from doing a Lego Family Word Sort all we had to do was dump out our ziplock baggie we had our words stored in and spray some shaving cream on to the tray.

To start Livia sorted all of her words.

And then read each card out loud after sorting them.

Then one by one she pulled each card down out of their family grouping to write the word into the shaving cream.

I won’t lie, we made a mess. Words on the table, written on the windows, and even on the walls. Thankfully shaving cream is super easy to wipe off!

She really wanted to be able to build her words but, the shaving cream wasn’t quite strong enough to mold (maybe we will give creating letters with play dough a try?)… She also got very frustrated over not being able to erase a word before starting a new word without using her hands so maybe next time we do this activity I will give her a spatula to use as an eraser. Either way we had a ton of fun with this super easy activity!
