Using playdough to spell is a great way to help your child gain a deeper understanding of the way words work through hands-on explorations, sorting words, and identifying patterns. Not only Play Dough Spelling a fun activity that your kids will love, it will also take learning and their ability to retain what they are learning to the next level.

Traditionally, spelling words is done by using lists and test. The older kids and I have opted out of this old way of doing things. Instead, we sort words and follow patterns so we can retain the words we learn. Playdough spelling is a very fun way for the older kids and I to do this and I know you will have a blast too!

Items needed:

Words Their Way word sort cards (or download sight word cards)
Peeps Play Dough (or my Easy Play Dough Recipe)

Directions:

STEP 1: Have kids sort words into their respective word families and read each card out loud.

STEP 2: Pull one card out of their family grouping and spell it by forming letters with play dough.

STEP 3: Once done with a card, place it back into the pile or bag and repeat with the next word in the family list until all rows are completed.

Learning spelling with words their way activities such as these moves away from traditional spelling lists. Using this method children are using various parts of their brain and multiple different senses to build those pathways that lead to strong memory retention.

Playdough spelling is a very fun activity that emphasizes on sorting words by families and recognizing patterns within those word families so that kids can bring their knowledge of words over into other areas of literacy.
