Thanksgiving Playdough Task Cards

Sharing is caring!

These Thanksgiving playdough task cards have been our main event this week. What started out as a quick little after-school activity turned into full Thanksgiving spreads made entirely out of dough. Pies lined up on plates, turkeys with rainbow feathers, and a few mystery foods that no one could quite identify but everyone agreed were “very fancy.”

It’s the kind of play that just keeps going.

The kids pulled out the cards, grabbed their favorite colors, and dove straight into creating. Some followed the designs exactly, while others took one look and made up their own version…either way, they stayed completely absorbed.

The best part? It’s creative without being complicated, open-ended enough to keep everyone engaged, and simple to reset when they’re ready to start again.

What You’ll Need for This Thanksgiving Playdough Activity

Before the playdough feast begins, grab these few simple supplies:

  • Printable Thanksgiving Playdough Task Cards – You can grab them below. They include designs like turkey, pumpkin pie, acorn, and corn.
  • Playdough – Store-bought or homemade both work great. A mix of fall colors like orange, yellow, brown, and red adds to the fun.
  • Play tray – Optional, but helps keep all the mess in one spot.
  • Laminator or page protectors – Totally optional, but worth it if your crew tends to get very into their dough play.

That’s it! Print the cards, set out the dough, and let the creativity roll…literally.

Setting Up Your Playdough Station

Getting this ready takes almost no time at all, which is probably why it’s been in constant rotation here. I print and cut the Thanksgiving playdough task card printable first, then slide them into a little task card box so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.

From there, I set everything out on a tray to help corral the mess (because let’s be honest, playdough never stays where it’s supposed to).

A few scoops of playdough in fall colors – orange, yellow, brown, and red – are plenty to get started. I usually add a couple of rolling pins, a plastic knife, and maybe some googly eyes or beads for extra flair.

Once it’s ready, the kids just jump in. They grab a card, pick their colors, and start building their own mini Thanksgiving feast.

There’s no right way to do it. Just hands-on, open-ended play that keeps them creating long after the first turkey is finished.

What Kids Are Learning

It’s wild how much learning sneaks into something as simple as playdough. Give kids a few colors of playdough and a handful of task cards, and they’ll take it from there…rolling, pressing, and shaping with so much focus you can practically see the gears turning.

Child shaping orange and tan playdough into a pumpkin pie beside an “I Can Make a Pumpkin Pie” task card. The playdough creation matches the pie design shown on the card with a round crust and orange center.

Every squeeze builds fine motor strength, every swap of color or shape decision taps into problem-solving and creativity.

Somewhere in the middle of all that rolling and shaping, patterns start to form. Colors get grouped together, pieces line up just right, and new ideas start to spill out without any prompting.

Child using brown and tan playdough to form an acorn beside an “I Can Make an Acorn” task card. The playdough acorn mirrors the simple acorn illustration on the card.

And the storytelling that comes out of it? That’s the best part. Suddenly the turkey has a name, the pumpkin pie is part of a restaurant menu, and the acorn’s going to a party. It’s learning unfolding naturally, tucked right inside the play.
