Free “Thankful” Turkey Hat Printable for Kids

Sharing is caring!

This turkey hat printable has become a full-blown Thanksgiving tradition around here. Every year, my kids take “I’m thankful for…” to a whole new level…usually somewhere between sweet and slightly savage. One year, my son wrote “mashed potatoes.” The next? “Mom’s Wi-Fi.” (I still don’t know whether to laugh or feel insulted.)

This little project is my go-to when everyone’s bouncing off the walls waiting for pie. The kids color, cut, and glue their turkey hats while we chat about gratitude and giggle over the things that make us happy, from grandparents to glitter glue.

It’s simple, silly, and the perfect mix of heartwarming chaos. Plus, nothing says “holiday memories” quite like a kid proudly wearing a turkey hat that declares they’re thankful for snacks.

How to Make This Thanksgiving Turkey Hat Craft

This part is super simple and very kid–doable. Think: you set everything out on the table, and they proudly do most of the work while you supervise, sip coffee, and spell “macaroni and cheese” for the fifth time so they can add it to their thankful list.

Step 1: Print and color your turkey hat

Start by printing the turkey hat printable on white cardstock or heavy printer paper. That gives the turkey head and feathers enough structure so they don’t flop over the minute your kiddo puts it on.

Set it on a tray or table with crayons, markers, or colored pencils and let them go wild. Brown turkey? Rainbow turkey? Turkey with neon feathers and a gold beak? All totally acceptable. This is where their personality really shows.

Step 2: Cut out the pieces

Once everything is colored, have your child carefully cut out the turkey head, feathers, and the headband strip on the printable. If they’re still working on scissor skills, you can cut the tricky parts and let them do the straight lines.

Then cut a long strip (or two shorter strips) of orange construction paper to make the headband. You’ll use this to wrap around their head and connect everything together.

Step 3: Write what they’re thankful for

Before any gluing happens, have your kids grab a pencil or marker and write “I’m thankful for…” right across the front of the orange band.

Then, on each feather, let them write (or tell you to write) what they’re thankful for – from family and friends to snacks, video games, and the family dog. There’s no wrong answer here; it’s all about what makes their little hearts happy.

Step 4: Build the headband

Glue the turkey head onto the front of the band, right above the words. Then attach the feathers to the back of the headband so they fan out like a big, colorful turkey tail. If things end up a little crooked or overlapping…that’s just “extra personality.”

Step 5: Fit and wear your turkey hat

Wrap the headband around your child’s head, overlapping the ends in the back. Secure with glue, tape, or a stapler, making sure it fits snug but comfy.

And there you have it – your very own turkey hat printable turned into a wearable gratitude crown! Expect lots of proud smiles, dramatic turkey struts, and at least one heartfelt “gobble gobble.”
