These last couple weeks have been beyond crazy with our move. With chaos fully exploding around us and restless kiddos we have been on the hunt for simple DIY quiet games our kids could create. Before we gave these a try we made some DIY Paint Chip Puzzles that were an absolute hit with the kids for our house hunting road trip. Wanting to expand on some of our easy busy bags before the big move we gave this DIY Lacing Cards a try — they loved them!

How to Make The Very Hungry Caterpillar DIY Lacing Cards:

Recently we were sent Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar for review in celebration of the 45th anniversary. My kids have read the book cover to cover countless times and had a blast playing with their color sorting caterpillars.

I love it when a book grows on my kids like that…but I absolutely hate trying to keep up with the dust jackets. Having a child who is particular about keeping things whole, dust jackets can bring about a whole new level of headache. If they get ripped, or bent, or in anyway “broken” we can face a full blown melt down…so typically I try to remove them and throw them away before they are discovered. However with this book I had no luck and sure enough it tore…

Needing a fast solution we recycled our book covers into these fun DIY Lacing Cards! To do this we simply glued our book jacket to a thin piece of cardboard (cereal boxes work best).

Once dried we cut out the illustration that we wanted to use for our lacing card. The largest illustration tends to work best.

And then once fully cut out we used our hole punch to create the lacing holes around the design.

Once holes are punched all the way around simply cut a long piece of yarn and hand over to your kiddo to play!

My kids had a blast not only creating these, but played with them for hours while in the car!
